“Recognizing Implicit Bias: The New Trajectory in Maternal Health”

  1. Whether you know it or not, you feel it as you see patients, interact with colleagues, and work with teams. Because you haven’t put a name to it, you internalize your feelings and go home at the end of the day beating yourself up.

It’s called implicit bias, and naming it is the first step to shifting it. Imagine being able to say to yourself, “there goes that implicit bias again” from a place of non-judgment, and without self-criticism. Over time you’ll release the heaviness of that feeling and enjoy the positivity that comes from working from a place of strength.

  1. It is important to know the different types of bias because they show up in different ways with different impacts that influence your experiences.

  2. The first step to change your mind, so that implicit bias is no longer having a stronghold on your career and life, is to do a self-assessment. To change anything, you first need to recognize it. This is the critical step in changing your mindset.

  3. Once you know what it is, what’s next?? During this program, you’ll expand your skillset, and learn new strategies to be more mindful, and tap into the superpower called compassion. You will begin to view those we serve from a new vantage point. If we are aware of history as well as "herstory" we will better serve her, one encounter at a time. As maternal health professionals, our goal is to be part of the solution to decrease poor maternal outcomes.

  4. C-Suite and hiring.  You will learn how to position yourself, a health professional to be a leader that’s operating with the awareness of bias.  Studies have proven that a diverse medical workforce has better maternal outcomes. Organizations that encourage a prevalent “groupthink” environment have problems with employee retention
